Coming from a background of many years in the fashion business, I am drawn to the human figure.
The body and the head, the nude and the clothed figure.
I love charcoal, black and white, light and shade, working from the live model, and portraiture.
I begin a portrait by doing a few charcoal drawings first, to get to know the sitter, and form my idea of the eventual composition. I aim to convey something of the character and personality of the person in front of me, while achieving a lifelike resemblance; this usually comes without trying too hard, once I am in tune with the sitter. My eventual painting is in oil, which takes a few sessions, some without the person being present. Photographs can be helpful at this stage, to make corrections, but there is no substitute for the real thing!
Somehow, the portrait just grows and takes on a life of its own.
Children are always a rewarding subject, but not easy!
