Graeme Messer

Contemporary art with a quirky intimacy Combining searing honesty with a wry humour, Graeme Messer’s autobiographical work is an offbeat take on a dysfunctional childhood and the issues that followed. Graeme draws on his background in theatre to call on a variety of media – from performance, photography and puppetry through to collage, assemblage and sculpture – to create an art that is direct, shocking, funny and moving. “My aim, in exploring and exposing the personal, is to evoke a deep connection and intimacy with the viewer. I am keen to be as open and honest as possible, even in areas that are often hidden or considered shameful.”

Graeme was born in South Africa, where he completed a B.A. Honors in Dramatic Art. Since then he has worked in England as an actor, director and writer – moving between the experimental and the West End. In 2008 Graeme decided to make a full time commitment to working in the fine art field. He has studied drawing with June Collier and at the New York Studio School and has recently completed the two-year painting course at Heatherleys, where he won the 2011 Mr. Heatherleys composition prize for painting. He has exhibited recently in Moreley’s Drawmore and with The Royal Portrait Society at the Mall Gallery.
