Lara Harwood

Lara has a BA Honours Degree in Illustration and an MA in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Art. She combines a highly successful illustration career with operating her own silkscreen studio producing fine art prints. Her illustration work is in constant demand where she is best known for her charming food packaging including the identity for Booths Supermarkets and packaging for the M&S Deli range and a series of posters for London Underground.

Other clients include the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Ikea and Psychologies Magazine. Most recently, she was commissioned by the Royal Mail to produce the Paralympic Games: Sailing stamp for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Collection.

Lara’s prints epitomise her enthusiasm and love of colour. With her deft brushwork, she is a master of the art of making something complicated look simple. The exuberant grace of Lara’s calligraphic brush work belies the intensity of concentration that goes into distilling these iconic images. Her work can be found in the collections of The V&A Museum and UNESCO as well as numerous private collections both in the UK and abroad.

As a freelance illustrator, I work on commissions for editorial projects , design and advertising – I enjoy the discipline and creative challenges of this work very much.

To explore ideas outside of my commissioned work I love to make mono prints and short edition screen prints. I also paint mainly in watercolour and generally carry a sketch book with me.

In a nutshell; Mixing lush pigments in yogurt pots, playing with colours, finding solutions for pictorial problems. Hoping to be surprised by a new way of doing things. Drawing in my sketch books. Looking at things carefully. Thinking about the arrangements. Drawing on words. Taking photos to collect all sorts of imagery. Reading from Sister Cortia and Jan Steward’s book Learning by Heart to help me with teaching or just to help me. Listening to Grayson Perry chat about making stuff. Lately myths and fairy tales are appearing along side an interest in patterns inspired from a recent trip to Rajasthan, all these are feeding into the mix.
